Not in a good place

That is the best way I can describe my son's disposition right now. Today we had his four-month check up and it made for a rough day. We arrived at 10:40 for an 11 a.m. appt (they always ask you to get there early) and we didn't see the doctor until 12:10 (I kid you not). Now I think my son's pediatricians are great, but I guess a lot of other people do too and so they stay very busy and somewhat overbooked.

Add to the long wait, my son was poked and prodded in the usual places - but this time, he really did not enjoy it. He fought back with everything he had, swatting at the doctor and then just getting red-faced and mad when he figured out that he wasn't going to win this battle. Finally, the shot lady came. This really put him over the top and being that he was almost due for a bottle didn't help.

Add to this that he is cutting teeth (his first one broke through this week) and you get a picture of the grumpy, drooling baby that I am desperately trying to console. So I am appealing to all of you more experienced parents out there who read this blog....what are the little tricks that you found worked to help a teething baby or a baby who just had shots? Right now, I'm using tylenol and I've tried to use the teething rings you put in the refrigerator, but they just make him more mad. I think they hurt him.

I would welcome any and all suggestions.

first of all, I always make sure I have nothing else planned for doctor days. second, I never get there more than 5 minutes before an appointment because there is always a wait. third, I give the tylenol right before leaving the house so that it has taken effect by the time we get to the doctors. and lastly, I make sure I'm not stressed and just able to hold and comfort the kids all day long. Check-ups are difficult days. I sympathize!

Same as the above, you might want to give him a cool washcloth to suck on if he doesn't like the teething rings. keeps his hands and mouth busy....

Thanks for the advice. The wet cloth is definitely a winner!

The stark difference between my advice and my wifes is funny.

I stand by mine though.

WHISKEY!! Pour some in a glass, dip your finger in and rub it on his gums, then drink the rest. Everyone is happier.
