A Little Surgery

So you're probably wondering where I've been?! What have I been up to?! Why haven't I been posting to my blog!?

Well here's the story. In January, I started having a little pain in my stomach after I ate. About two inches to the right of my belly button to be exact. I mentioned it to my OB/GYN at my annual appt and he said if it got worse, I should get it checked out.

Fast forward to March. It got worse. Every time I ate, about an hour later, it would start to hurt. Like someone was holding a match to the inside of me. So I saw a gastroenterologist, who sent me for a CT scan. The scan revealed something on my intestines - what they think is "Meckel's diverticulum". It's a little piece of you from when you were a developing fetus that stuck around on your intestines. Many people have it and don't know they have it because it never causes a problem, but for some people (like me) it does. It usually affects children, but some adults get it too. Once he read my results, my gastro Dr. referred me to a surgeon.

Today I met with the surgeon and tomorrow, I'm having surgery. He's going to laparoscopically look at my intestines, remove what's wrong and take out my appendix while he's in there. I should be home in my own bed tomorrow night, but I'm not sure how much I'll feel like blogging for a little while so I thought I'd let you all know what's going on.

In the meantime, for those of you interested in boning up on rare conditions of the intestines, here is a video of some medical students explaining Meckel's diverticulum through interpretive dance.
