For the past week, I have heard the sounds of heavy equipment and the "back up noise" emanating from the woods behind my house. So today, on my way out to run errands with OBB, I decided to drive down the next street over in my neighborhood and see what was going on.
When I got there, I discovered an excavator (an example is pictured below for those of you who aren't sure which concoction of massive yellow metal that is...don't worry, I wasn't sure what it was called until today when I came home and looked it up in one of OBB's picture books).

So the excavator was clearing some woods and placing the remains in a huge dumpster. This was deeply enthralling for OBB who watched intently from his car seat.
But at that moment, I made a split second decision. I decided that OBB couldn't really appreciate the sounds and force of such a big machine without experiencing it firsthand.
So I parked the car, took him out of his car seat, and walked across the street to the edge of the property where we could stand as close to the action as possible while also avoiding flying tree debris.
And we stood and watched the excavator do its work. For a while. Until I realized it was 90 degrees and we were standing outside watching construction equipment and we were both starting to get really hot.
But OBB loved every minute of it. He pointed and smiled and made "ooo! ooo!" sounds. And that made the stares from the obese project foreman more than worth it for me.
