Let's Talk About It

"Can we talk about the racing? "

This is a question I hear regularly these days. People see the videos of OBB racing and want to know:

-Isn't he scared?
-Aren't you scared?
-How fast is he going?

And most often,
-How does he know to do that?

In fact, at my last MOPS meeting, while all of us moms were talking about the First Day of School and sending our kindergartners off into the great unknown, I had a mom question how I could possibly be upset about putting my five-year-old on a bus to go to school by himself when I allow him to drive 40 miles an hour around a track every Saturday night.

"Excellent point", I replied.

So to answer those burning questions...

-No, he's not scared. He's cool as a cucumber about the whole thing. I love it because I feel like it's building his confidence and is putting him in situations where he makes new friends.

-Yes, I was a little freaked out the first time I saw him do it, but now I'm used to it. Although I do need to work on my game face during races and not react so much when he spins out or has a minor mishap.

-We think he's probably going about 35-40 miles an hour.

-And finally, if you ask OBB how he knows how to do it, he'll tell you one of two answers...that he learned it from watching Lightning McQueen or that he learned it from watching big car races with Daddy. That, plus lots of gentle, helpful hints from his father have brought him to where he is today.

Just to give you an example of OBB's schooling as provided by his father: every race is videotaped and tapes are reviewed several times afterward to analyze and weed out problems.

And then last night, my WH came home with this for OBB:

What are these, you ask? They are aerial pictures of the various tracks that OBB races at.

If you look closely, you can see that they are laminated so that they can be drawn on to highlight the best route or "line" for OBB to make when driving around the track to ensure optimum speed.

Yeah..Daddy takes this pretty seriously.

Oh my goodness! I can tell Rob is just all over this. I think its fabulous that they have this passion in common. I have to admit, I am very impressed at Charlie's ability for his age. I'm pretty sure that Lilly (1st grade) still can't maneuver a power wheels without wrecking it into trees :-/
