Thoughts from the past week

~As soon as you take on the title of mother, you need to accept that you will never stop worrying about them. Not when they get older, not even when they’re grown up. In fact, you will have bigger things to worry about for them when they’re grown up.

~You know those people who look like morons driving down the road with their gas tank doors open? They might not be morons. They might just be the parent of a 4 year old.

~There’s a fine line between being the crazy mom who goes on the internet and diagnoses her child with whatever illness she finds on there and being the mom who is so laid back that she fails to be an advocate for her child. Most of the moms I know are walking this tight rope everyday.

~When you’re 20 months old, just about anything that goes wrong in your day can be fixed with a sippy cup of juice. And maybe a nice, long nap.

~After dealing with a frustrating situation at preschool, I totally get the thinking behind parents who homeschool. In fact, I came up with my own little bumper sticker for homeschooling parents. It goes like this… “I Homeschool My Kids to Keep Them Away From Yours.”

~In the words of a great preschool teacher whom I am related to by marriage, “Your job is not to be their friend. Your job is to be their mother.”

~No amount of doggie treats or petting can ever adequately recognize the self-sacrifice that my dog makes on a daily basis, as she plays so gently with two preschoolers, who are not always kind or careful.

~And finally…standing at the cash register in a clothing store this week, the little old lady ringing me up looks at me and says quietly, “You know this is the best time of your life, don’t you? Right now. This is the time you’ll look back on and wish you could re-live.”
