The Bug Guy

So about three weeks ago, my WH was in the backyard, digging up an old horseshoe pit to make room for OBB's sandbox and he discovered some bugs that he found unsettling. So he asked me to have a bug guy come and check the house. Simple enough request, right?

The first bug guy came with his boss. He stayed for over an hour, and while he didn't find any actual bugs, he found evidence that they'd been here once and therefore encouraged us to invest in the Super Duper Bug Protection Plan for a whopping $1400 and then $600 a year after that. We decided to get another opinion.

Bug guy number 2: stayed all of ten minutes. Said my house was so dry underneath that it was dusty and there wasn't anything to be found. Offered no plan. No need for one, he said. And off he went. We decided we needed a third opinion.

#3: I called bug guy number 3. They wanted to charge us over $100 just to come and see IF we had bugs. No thank you, I said. Still need another opinion.

#4. Decided to call a national chain. Called the phone number and was placed on hold for an interminable amount of time. Decided that if I got placed on hold like this when I punched the "new customer" button, what would happen when I punched the "existing customer" button? Would they hang up on me? So I pre-emptively hung up on them.

However, this leads me to my current dilemma...I still need another opinion. My WH has grown weary of my bug-man seeking antics and would just like to resolve this. So I guess I'll open up the phone book and just start calling numbers. I was thinking this could make a Dateline special - but what with gas prices, the war and the election, I'm afraid my bug-man story would get cut from the broadcast at the last minute when Obama announces his running mate or oil tops $150 a barrel.

We had a lot of ants once. We paid about $150 to get rid of them, and the company offered us an annual contract for about $225 that would guarantee protection against ANY kind of bug. And we thought THAT was a ripoff. well, maybe not a ripoff - but it was unneccessary. I would suggest that your first opinion was definitely somebody trying to take advantage of you.

Now I get a $10 jug of chemicals from Walmart and spray my foundation once a year and it pretty much keeps out anything that crawls. I would say if you don't actually have any bugs right now, you are probably fine to do that...
